Health Professionals: Support Gun Violence Prevention Legislation in Oregon
The American Medical Association has declared that gun violence in the United States is a public health crisis. From 2010 to 2014, over 2,000 people in Oregon died from firearms injuries, with suicide accounting for more than half of these deaths. The prescription for this crisis is clear: the Oregon State Legislature must pass gun violence prevention bills that will save the lives of Oregonians.
In particular, we call for the Oregon Legislature to pass the following bills:
- SB 868 (Extreme Risk Prevention Order): Establishes an Extreme Risk Protection Order to empower families and law enforcement to prevent gun tragedies by establishing a civil court process to restrict access to firearms for up to a year based on clear and convincing evidence;
- SB 797 (Close the Charleston Loophole): Among other things, would close the Charleston loophole to give law enforcement enough time to complete criminal background checks before gun sales can proceed;
- SB 1026 (Child Access Prevention): Would make it a crime to allow a child to gain unintended access to a firearm by failing to lock or properly secure it.
