More than 60 organizations collaborated on a recently released report titled Methane Gas: Health, Safety, and Decarbonization to set the record straight on the environmental and health impacts of so-called "natural" gas, which powers appliances in many of our homes. On September 14th, we hosted a Health Impacts of Gas Appliances webinar for attendees to learn more about why the fracked gas industry is detrimental to our climate and to the health of our communities. Three of our featured speakers are co-authors of report.
Featured speakers included:
- Melanie Plaut, MD (Oregon PSR Healthy Climate Action Team member & 350PDX Fossil Fuel Resistance Team Co-Coordinator), who discussed what fracked gas is and its impacts on our climate;
- Theodora Tsongas, PhD, MS (Oregon PSR Healthy Climate Action Team member), who discussed the impacts of gas stoves on indoor air quality and health, as well as misinformation surrounding the health impacts of gas stoves;
- Ann Turner, MD (Oregon PSR Healthy Climate Action Team member), who discussed environmental justice concerns relative to the health impacts of gas stoves;
- Samantha Hernandez (Oregon PSR Climate Justice Organizer), who discussed harm reduction efforts people can take to limit harmful air pollution from gas stoves, as well as lower-cost options for cooking without gas.
