Oregon PSR member Laureen Nussbaum, PhD (pictured here) recently published a book, Shedding Our Stars: The Story of Hans Calmeyer and How He Saved Thousands of Families Like Mine, which chronicles her experiences as a Jewish child who dodged persecution in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam during WWII thanks to German official Hans Calmeyer.

Her new book also touches on some of her history with Oregon PSR. Laureen and her husband, Dr. Rudi Nussbaum, worked to collect the Downwinders’ stories and formalize their findings in a peer-reviewed article to more effectively advocate for official acknowledgment of the dangers posed by Hanford and for the health of those exposed to the low-level radiation that resulted from US nuclear weapons development.

Laureen will be reading from her new book on Sunday, October 13th, 2:00 – 4:00 PM at the Oregon Jewish Museum & Center for Holocaust Education (724 NW Davis Street in Portland) and again on Tuesday, October 15th beginning at 7:30 PM at First Unitarian Church (1211 SW Main Street in Portland).
