Northwest Teaching for Social Justice Annual Conference: Rethinking Our Classrooms, Organizing for Better Schools, October 18th

“Rethinking Our Classrooms, Organizing for Better Schools” is the theme for the 18th Annual Northwest Teaching for Social Justice Conference to be held at Parkrose High School in Portland, Oregon. The conference will take place on October 18th. There will be speakers, workshops, a resource fair, and more.

Northwest Teaching for Social Justice seeks out and strives to offer workshops that:

  •   Express a social justice perspective
  •   Are hands-on and practical
  •   Give participants a chance to talk to one another

Morning Keynote Walidah Imarisha 

Walidah Imarisha is the director of the Center for Black Studies and an Associate Professor in the Black Studies Department at Portland State University. She is the co-editor of two anthologies, Octavia’s Brood: Science Fiction Stories from Social Justice Movements and Another World Is PossibleImarisha is also the author of Angels with Dirty Faces: Three Stories of Crime, Prison and Redemptionwhich won a 2017 Oregon Book Award. She spent six years with the Oregon Humanities Conversation Project as a public scholar, facilitating programs across the state about Oregon Black History and other topics. In 2015, she received a Tiptree Fellowship for her science fiction writing.

 Afternoon Keynote Jesse Hagopian

Jesse Hagopian taught in the public schools for more than 20 years and founded the Ethnic Studies course at Seattle’s Garfield High School. He is a Rethinking Schools editor, on the staff of the Zinn Education Project, and a columnist for Truthout. He is the author of Teach Truth: The Struggle for Antiracist Education, as well as the co-editor of the Rethinking Schools books Teaching for Black LivesTeacher Unions and Social Justice, and Teaching Palestine. He co-edited More Than a Score: The New Uprising Against High Stakes Testing. Hagopian serves on the Black Lives Matter at School steering committee.
