Rumble on the River #22 - "Renewable" Fuels: Climate Fix or Magical Thinking?

Thursday, March 20th

Doors & Info Tables 5:30   Panel 6:30

Rumble forums are always free.

The fossil fuel industry is distracting officials, regulators, and business leaders with false climate solutions that endanger public health and the environment. As Zenith Energy pushes to make Portland a hub for so-called “renewable” diesel and “sustainable” aviation fuel, this panel will expose the dangers of these fuels. Despite industry claims, renewable diesel increases air pollution, toxic emissions, and associated health risks in nearby communities, often with a higher carbon footprint than petroleum fuels due to deforestation and intensive agriculture.

“Sustainable” aviation fuel releases harmful ultrafine particulate matter (PM 2.5) that worsen respiratory conditions. Meanwhile, “renewable” natural gas (RNG) is largely derived from methane produced by factory farms, which pollute air and water, fueling respiratory illnesses and antibiotic resistance. RNG also expands industrial agriculture and fossil fuel infrastructure, worsening the climate crisis.

This forum will bring together experts, activists, and community leaders to cut through industry greenwashing and push for real climate solutions that prioritize public health and environmental justice.

Panel:

Amy van Saun---Senior Attorney with Center for Food Safety, serves with Stand Up To Factory Farms

Jeremiah Hayden---Staff Reporter at Street Roots

Dan Serres–Advocacy Director with Columbia Riverkeeper

Barbara Bernstein—Host of KBOO Radio’s Locus Focus, Film Maker–most recent productions are “Once A Braided River” and “Chasing Chimeras–The Lure of Deceptive Climate Solutions”

Moderator: Dineen Crowe, Campaign Manager with 350PDX

Since fall of 2022, Rumble On The River has presented 21 community forums in neighborhoods throughout Portland and at the Public Interest Environmental Law Conference, U of O. Rumbles bring together expert voices to discuss a range of environmental topics. These have included the Columbia & Willamette River ecosystems, transportation, false climate solutions, urban forestry, shade equity, risk-bonding, salmon restoration and the Portland Clean Energy Community Benefits Fund/PCEF. A central Rumble focus has been the Critical Energy Infrastructure (CEI) Hub and the potential hazards of having 90% of Oregon’s fuel and a mix of toxics stored within Portland’s city limits on a riverside seismic liquefaction zone.
