Shane Burley, a journalist and filmmaker based in Portland, will speak on “Democracy in Crisis – How did we get here and what do we do now?” on Wednesday, October 14 at 7 pm in Chemeketa Community College’s Building 6 auditorium.

Burley is author, co-author, or editor of four books, including Fascism Today: What It Is and How to End It. His work has been featured in NBC News, Al Jazeera, Jewish Currents, The Daily Beast, Jacobin, The Baffler, Yes! Magazine and the Oregon Historical Quarterly.
Burley’s films document a variety of pro-democracy struggles.
Each year the Salem Peace Lecture presents the Salem Peacemaker of the Year award to an individual or organization that has engaged in outstanding peace work. This year, the honoree will be The Salem Multicultural Institute, organizer of the annual World Beat Festival and much more.
The Salem Peace Lecture Committee organizes the annual Salem Peace Lecture to bring national-class speakers to the Mid-Willamette Community with the co-sponsorship of a variety of local organizations such as Chemeketa Community College, Farmworker Ministry Northwest, United Methodist Church, Oregon PeaceWorks, Salem Region Indivisible, Salem 350, Salem Friends Meeting, Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility and others.
